Most bacterial vaginosis infections start with the organism Gardnerella vaginosis, which creates a biofilm that subsequently provides a conducive environment for the proliferation of other opportunistic bacteria. G vaginalis also produces vaginolysin, a pore-forming toxin affecting human cells.
